Baja California Eco-Safari – The Gray Whales, Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve, and Treasured Landscapes of the Baja Peninsula

OVERVIEW

Surrounded by a natural aquarium, the rugged magical landscape of the Baja California Peninsula is home to vast deserts rich in vegetation, pristine beaches, jagged mountains, an array of shore birds and isolated villages. Of special interest are the gray whales. Each year, gray whales travel thousands of miles from the Arctic Ocean to the warm waters of Baja California's lagoons, designated wildlife refuges, to court, mate, give birth and care for their young.

It is an unforgettable experience to view these giant mammals at arm’s length, and  some may even let themselves be touched and present you to their offspring!  Baja is a wonderful natural laboratory and this is one of our very favorite field courses.  The Sonoran Desert and Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve lands are simply jaw dropping, and oozing with history and significance.

Background

Your field study starts in San Diego and plunges you deep into Baja's midsection.  The first night in Ensenada we will have an orientation and presentation on La Baja and our curriculum for the course.  We will travel by mini-bus or 12 passenger van, giving ample opportunities to study the unique flora of the Sonoran Desert, the most biodiverse of all the world's deserts.

The lagoons of the Western shoreline of the peninsula offer perfect conditions for the massive Gray Whales, Eschrictius robustus, to overwinter... and to mate, birth, and train their young for the long commute back to the Berring Sea in March and April.  Ojo de Liebre and San Ignacio are two of the most important of these lagoons, and the destinations of this field edventure.

Lodge Based -- Hotels each night, with two nights in San Ignacio. In Baja we will stay in the state-run Desert Inns all along the way, Spanish Colonial architecture, nice accommodations, and great meals.
